Reacting to Foreclosures survey

The Metropolitan Mayors Caucus is surveying mayors as to what is being done regarding foreclosures and vacant buildings. Mayors and managers should have received a survey via email from Beth Dever.

Please take the time to complete the survey. The Mayors Caucus along with the MacArthur Foundation, CMAP, Chicago Metropolis 2020 and UIC will host a meeting to discuss how municipalities can respond to the recent spate of foreclosures, specifically looking at how communities can regulate and deal with vacant properties, in order to avoid neighborhood blight.

Your input is valuable. Please return the survey by March 7 via fax (312) 553-4355 or via .
Sen. Durbin has concerns over CN deal

Sen. Dick Durbin joined Congresswoman Melissa Bean in voicing his opposition to Canadian National Railroad's proposed purchase of the EJ&E line.

"An acquisition of this size will have a dramatic impact on the Chicago region for years to come," said Sen. Durbin in a letter to E. Hunter Harrison, CN president. "At this point Canadian National has not demonstrated a willingness to meet the needs of the communities along the EJ&E, provide long-term commitments to the region, or guarantee full cooperation with the proposed STAR line and current Amtrak service, which leads us to oppose the acquisition as it stands today."

The Urban Land Institute and UIC/Great Cities Institute is offering an online course entitled "Introduction to Planning and Development for Plan Commissioners."

The program provides simple, constructive learning modules. It is taught by UIC faculty and ULI Chicago members. The online course runs from April 14-May 12 and costs $350.
