Telecommunications Bill HB1500
Call to action

HB 1500 will be posted for a committee hearing on March 8. Please review the Position Paper and a Summary of Key Provisions of HB 1500 Cable and Video Competition Law of 2007 prepared by the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus. Call members of the House Telecommunications Committee to express your concerns.

Key elements:
If passed, HB 1500 will allow AT&T/SBC to discriminate by redlining communities and will increase a digital divide. AT&T/SBC has told Wall Street they will offer their new U-verse service to primary “high value” neighborhoods. Most consumers will be offered ordinary satellite dish service, the very same service that is being offered right now. Seniors and low income areas will not only be left behind, but to add insult to injury will be forced to help finance AT&T/SBC’s upgrade in other “high value” neighborhoods.

By narrowing revenue definitions, HB1500 will decrease money paid to cities for franchise fees and local programming. To make matters worse, AT&T will not pay any franchise fees on its satellite delivered video services, which will be the overwhelming majority of their video customers.

Legislative Updates/Summary of Key Provisions
Recycle used athletic shoes
Through April 20

Representative Kathy Ryg's district office is serving as a drop-off center from now through Friday, April 20 for the "Reuse-A-Shoe” recycling program. This program is the perfect opportunity to keep your old shoes out of landfills and turn them into useful material. This newly-recycled material will become gym floors, running tracks and safe playground surfaces.

Lake County residents interested in recycling their old shoes may bring them to Rep. Ryg's office at 50 Lakeview Parkway, Suite 114, in Vernon Hills until Friday, April 20. Business hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m. All brands of clean, dry athletic shoes, except those with cleats or spikes, will be accepted. Please remove all zippers and metal eyelets before dropping the shoes off. Shoes with LED lights are acceptable. Sandals, flip- flops, dress shoes, boots and water shoes are not accepted because they contain materials which cannot be recycled.
