community/economic development.

Suburban Transportation Commission
First meeting held recently
U.S. Representatives Melissa Bean and Mark Kirk,
along with state and local leaders from Cook, Lake
and McHenry counties, hosted the first hearing of the
bipartisan Suburban Transportation Commission.
The Commission met on Tuesday, April 10, to
discuss the transportation needs of the area. Also on
the panel were State Senators Michael Bond and Matt
Murphy.
Testifying before the panel were Marty Buehler, Lake
County Transportation Director, and Ken Koehler,
McHenry County Chairman. Also on hand to testify
were Jim Reilly, RTA Board Chairman; Dick Welton
from PACE; and Phil Pagano, Metra Executive Director.
The Commission will hold hearings and issue reports
on key transportation issues facing northern Illinois.
Some facts of interest include:
- two-thirds of all Metra riders live in the suburbs
- 83% of all suburban families live within one mile
of Metra service
- a reverse commute train departs from downtown
to Waukegan
- the new STAR line will have 18 stations
- the average suburban commuter is delayed an
additional 58 hours a year
- commuting times are up 57%
A second Suburban Transportation Commission
hearing is planned for a location in downtown
Chicago

Electronics recycling event, June 2
The Lake Zurich Public Works Department, in
conjunction with E-Scrap Technologies, is hosting a
Computer/Electronics Recycling Event Saturday, June
2, from 8:30 am until 3:30 pm at 505 Telser Road.
Items accepted free of charge from residential and
non-residential sources are: computers, televisions,
printers (ink-jet) fax machines, telephones, cell
phones and other household electronics. All
municipalities are invited to this event.
There will be a small fee assessed between $7-10 for
commercial copiers, dumb terminals, monochrome
monitors, monitors 21" or larger and monitors with
burnt screens. Contact the Public Works Department

Bylaws amendment
Proposed associate membership
The Board of Directors has recommended adding an
Associate Member catalog to the Lake County
Municipal League. Associate memberships would be
open to vendors, suppliers, attorneys, architects and
other organizations doing business with
municipalities.
The amendment to the Bylaws would appear in Article
III Membership, Section 3.5 and would read as follow:
An associate membership category permits
vendors
or suppliers doing business with Lake County
municipalities to join the Lake County Municipal
League. Dues will be set by the Board. Associate
Members will not have the ability to serve on the Board
of Directors, but may serve on committees and
participate in all LCML activities.

Cell phone collection
State Rep. Karen May is accepting donations of used
cell phones to aid victims of domestic violence.
These phones, collected by Shalva, are purchased by
a private sector firm that specializes in fundraising
programs. The dollars received from the cell phones
allow Shalva to fund client services and outreach and
education programs on domestic violence.
Phones can be dropped off at Rep. May's new
legislative office, 427 Sheridan Road, Highwood, every
daily from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. So far, Rep. May's
office has been able to collect more than 3,000 used
cell phones to aid victims and increase awareness of
domestic violence in our community. Please call (847)

Vehicle and surplus equipment auction
The DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference will
be holding its next annual vehicle and surplus
equipment auction on Saturday, June 9. The auction
will be held at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn
If you are interested in auctioning items or purchasing
vehicles or equipment, please contact Andreason

auction is open to all municipalities.
