Education Reform Committee & Illinois' 2008 Budget
The Metropolitan Mayors Caucus Education Reform Committee met last week with members of Governor Blagojevich's staff. Among them was John Filan, chief operating officer, and Ginger Ostro, budget director, Governor's Office of Management and Budget.
Filan and Ostro presented an overview of the 2008 Budget for the State of Illinois. Goals include:
- Find a long-term revenue source to meet the ongoing costs of providing state services such as education and health care.
- Reform the state's existing tax system and include all sectors of the economy.
- Provide every adult in the state with access to affordable health care, as already provided to the state's children.
- Provide schools with the single largest one-year funding increase and an historic $10 billion investment over the next four years.
- Improve pension funding significantly to save the state money in the long run.

| Lake County's 2006-2011 Highway Improvement Program
Lake County businesses and residents rely on a transportation system that incorporates elements owned by the state, county, 52 municipalities, 15 township road districts, the Illinois Tollway, Metra and PACE. The transportation system is one of the most visible and fundamental assets of the county. The five-year highway improvement program plans for improvements and maintenance on highways and bikeways under the jurisdiction of Lake County, and also Lake County's share of projects managed by others.
Lake County's 2006-2011 Highway Improvement Program totals $199 million. This level of infrastructure investment supports more than 8,400 jobs. In addition to the jobs generated by the program, maintaining the county's highway system is essential for a healthy local economy, a good environment, and for the efficient movement of goods and people. It's a factor in the quality of life in the county.

| Edens Spur Repairs
Lane closures
One toll booth lane and the I-PASS Only lane in the cash plaza in each direction are scheduled to close at 9 am on Monday, April 30, at the Edens Spur Toll Plaza for plaza reconfiguration work. The lanes are scheduled to reopen in mid-May. The two toll booth lanes that were previously closed for modifications will reopen and will remain available in the cash plaza in each direction.
Plaza modification work includes pavement repairs, drainage work, and installation of refurbished toll booths, signs, and overhead lighting. Work also is scheduled in the toll plaza building. The project is scheduled to be completed in summer 2007. | |
