General Assembly on Overtime

The Illinois General Assembly continues to drag into session overtime. Last week, the legislators and the governor left on June 15th without action on such issues as healthcare, electric rate relief and the state budget.

Instead, the Governor Blagojevich and the four legislative leaders (Senate President Jones, Senate Minority Leader Watson, House Speaker Madigan and House Republican Leader Cross) met in an effort to achieve consensus on a state spending plan for the upcoming fiscal year which starts in July. In addition, the Governor instead of meeting privately with the leaders (which is standard practice) included various outside groups to participate in the meetings.

While the leaders expected the meetings to focus on the budget (in its entirety), the Governor desired to focus on specific issues such as Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) and a cap on Cook County residential property tax assessments.

The Illinois General Assembly is scheduled to meet this week.

Dial 811 for JULIE

To make excavating safer, JULIE has introduced a new national "Call before you dig" number - 811. Knowing where the utility lines are buried before digging prevents homeowners and professional excavators from damaging underground utility lines while digging.

The new number is especially designed for people working near service boundaries and are not sure which one-call center they should contact.

For more information on JULIE, please go to www.illinois1call.com.
Water Supply Planning

CMAP is facilitating an important new effort to study water supply and demand issues in the 11-county northeastern Illinois region (Cook, Boone, DeKalb, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kankakee, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, & Will). The Regional Water Supply Planning Group (RWSPG) is composed of public officials, academics, business representatives, and other citizens, and will, together with CMAP, produce a long-term water supply/demand management plan in 2009.

Future water availability is uncertain given that the 11-county region is expected to add more than two million people by the year 2030. Now is the time to learn about the RWSPG, follow the planning process, and discover their findings and recommendations. Please visit the CMAP/RWSPG web site at http://chicagoareaplanning.org/ watersupply.

The next RWSPG Meeting, which is open to the public, will be held on Tuesday, June 26, 10:00 am - 12:30 pm in CMAP Office, Sears Tower, 8th Floor. Featured Speaker: Dr. Benedykt Dziegielewski, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences, "Factors Included in Water Demand Modeling"

For more information or to make a reservation, please contact or call (312) 386-8646.

Telecommunications Bill SB 678 passes Senate

Yesterday the Illinois Senate unanimously passed SB 678 by a vote of 54-0.
The bill now goes to the Governor for his signature.
Please share the LCMLetter with your trustees, administrator and staff. It is our aim to keep elected officials informed about the issues facing their municipalities.
Sincerely,

Christine Gentes
